Stripe on! When it comes to patterns, designers are taking a linear approach this
season. From mod zigzags to bold sailor motifs, stripes are dominating
the runways as the classic print gets a cheery makeover. Instead of
la mariniere (nautical) lines in standard navy blue
and white, designers have striped their runway looks in practically
every shade of the rainbow. There’s nothing uniform about them, either.
These stripes are coming from all directions at different widths and in
refreshingly vibrant hues. For example, Lacoste
gave stripes a sporty-cool update with chunky bands in burgundy and
white, and adding an unexpected dash of persimmon
orange for a graphic, modern effect
. At DKNY, Donna Karan coupled a hodgepodge of shades together, like yellow, aqua-blue, and red, into surprisingly cohesive coordinates
. And Brandon Sun manipulated red and teal stripes, spacing them out or clumping them together, to form geometric shapes.
For spring, there’s only one rule of thumb — more is more.
So, mix, match and pile it on with gusto. Clashing colors? Who cares!
Outrageous print medleys? Why not! Go ahead
, and
pick your poison.
