Velvet has always been associated with a rich and sumptuous appearance. It's a way to evoke texture, as well as a sense of romance and royalty. Historically, velvet has always looked somewhat dated, but for Fall 2013/Winter 2014, designers used velvet for modern day and evening looks that ranged from soft full length dresses to structured pant suits.
Typical velvet colors for fall and winter traditionally have been black or dark hues, but this season's runways were marked by bright blue pants suits at Phillip Lim, and embellished burgundy and taupe full length dresses at Louis Vuitton and Ralph Lauren.
At first I wasn't sure how I felt about this trend; I mean how versatile and workable is velvet? Turns out after looking at multiple runway pictures, I actually love it! Dark? Gothic? Forget it! Velvet is back in fashion and it’s for everybody. This royal fabric popped up at innumerable shows like Balmain, Louis Vuitton, Tory Burch and Ralph Lauren. Not the least of fashion houses, right?! Done in many new and surprising ways, the velvet looks brought some of that extra luxury to this season’s fall collections. Check out my favorite runway looks below.
