Radiant and luxurious, emeralds have long been prized for their rarity. These gems are valued chiefly by the depth of their color and unlike diamonds, which are less desirable if flawed, emeralds are expected to have some irregularities ("inclusions"). Jewelry designer, Judy Geib says "Emerald inclusions are called le gardin, the French word for 'garden', adding a bit of poetry to their preciousness."
