Beyond the Fringe

Left to Right: Derek Lam, Jason Wu, Gucci

The S/S '15 runways were nothing short of a suede parade as suede got an easygoing update with refreshing designs, from ultrachic skirts to sumptuously wrapped outerwear. The soft and delicate fabric is making a comeback and it’s one of the most surprising trends that surfaced during Fashion Week. What makes the trend even more of a head-turner are the colors and silhouettes.

Derek Lam showed suede separates, including a knee-grazing overcoat, in vibrant shades of purple (above, left). Lam also crafted belted skirts, dresses, and patchwork pieces in the inviting texture—what grouped the pieces together even more so were contrast top-stitching, which gave off a ’70s vibe.

Jason Wu also sent suede down his New York runway (above, center). His silhouettes were structured, fitted, and sporty. Rounding out his suede set were wrap coats, dresses with thigh-high slits, and short-sleeved blouses.

In Milan, Frida Giannini of Gucci also served suede. She sent wide-leg crops, kimono-style tops, and button-front A-line skirts down the runway all in swaths of suede. One of the standout silhouettes was the plunging, thigh-high slit green number (above, right) shown with a pair of (also suede!) to-the-knee boots. And like Derek Lam’s collection, Giannini’s also had a ’70s vibe.

The trend also appeared at the ChloĆ©, Tibi, Michael Kors, Altuzarra, and Jill Stuart shows. Needless to say, suede for spring is happening. What makes this trend worth investing in?  The fabric can be worn year-round and has become seasonless- just like leather has in years.
