Turtlenecks: #theitknit

3.1 Phillip Lim
Bottega Veneta

Good-bye, plain merino crewnecks; hello chunky turtlenecks, from boxy and cropped to lean and long.  While head-to-toe knits were all over the runways, this look can scream Himalayan yeti in the real world.  So stick to one piece, and add light layers underneath, like peekaboo shirttails, a tissue-thin T, or a flowy silk dress.  On the bottom? Team your big knit with a trim leg- think skinny jeans or dark slacks and a low kitten heel or loafer.

A Fine Line

Marco de Vincenzo
Dries van Noten

Eye-catching patterns are a vision to behold.  So think bold and show your stripes this fall.  There's something irresistibly off-kilter about this season's graphic pieces.  But don't be fooled by their irreverence- there's craftsmanship behind the lack of symmetry.  Take Marco de Vincenzo's skirt for example, it was hand-pleated with ribbons iridescent macrame lace to create a ripple effect.  The optical challenge it represents is no illusion.

How to Wear It...
1. This strong print demands a lot of attention, so don't mix it with another statement piece.
2. Wearing these graphic prints from head to toe can be asking for sensory overload, so offset pieces with sleek pumps and delicate jewelry.
3.  Prefer to let your accessories do the talking? Striped shoes or a wavy clutch lends visual interest to a minimal outfit.

Contrast Coat

Diane von Furstenberg

Move beyond a basic black peacoat (ie boring lint collector) with a standout topper that's multi-textured and cozy.  Mixing fabrics can be tough to pull off, but this coat does the work for you.

Get it Right....

-Layer it over neutral separates to make a statement.
-For a more subtle pairing, try with slim cropped pants, skinny jeans or a minidress.
-When the weather gets chilly, pull on tights and simple low-heeled leather boots.

Fall Style Resolutions

Why wait for January? September is the right time to re-envision your wardrobe and change up your point of view.

Resolve to.... Add Some Edge to a Sweet Ensemble

A neat pink overcoat plus a pretty print dress and structured purse equals girlie- that is, until you look down.  Instead of predictable pumps, slip on these sleek metallic sneaks to ground the feminine vibe and make the look cool.  Ditto the rose metal watch and retro shades.

Resolve to.... Master Minimalism

The simplest things are often the trickiest ones to pull off.  Think streamlined, but never boring. Made from linen, this cinched sheath reads ultra-sophisticated when paired with a white oxford, so you can skip the fussy extras.  Let a woven gold bangle peek out from under the sleeve and play off the navy with tan riding boots.

Resolve to.... Bank on Bold Color

Still staring into the closet of bland hues?  Snap out of it and reach for coral, crimson, or mustard. Fiery orange and deep crimson seem unlikely mates, but they contrast nicely when teamed with camel.  Look to hints of navy, teal and brown to tie together your brights and neutrals. A pleated skirt and sophisticated tote add polish.

Resolve to.... Throw in a Menswear Twist

Showcase your boy-meets-girl style without looking as if you raided his closet. Heading to brunch?  Swap out your jeans for tweed pants that pick up the rich navy in your blouse.  Accent with a pair of shiny patent oxfords and fedora, but keep the tomboy references in check with delicate jewelry.

Resolve to.... Rethink Sweater Dressing

It's a no-brainer to grab a thick knit when the temps plummet, but up the style factor with a flowy dress instead of jeans. A gray angora shell seems deceptively low-key, until you pair it with a blush midi dress.  The combo is soft and charming, especially when you bring in similarly-hued booties and dainty pearls.  Hello, date night!
