Feast Your Eyes on Eyelet

Eyelet is a trend we see every spring, but this year designers like Rebecca Taylor, J.Crew and Catherine Malandrino actually made these tiny holes the star of the runways. I especially love Rebecca’s take in which she styled crop tops over eyelet shirts resulting in two seasonal trends in one, which I consider a WIIIIIN!

I know what you’re thinking, eyelet holes mean see-through. I'm here to dispel the myth with pieces I've rounded up that don’t reveal too much and still give you a nice breeze for those hot spring/summer nights. After all, come July you know you’ll wish you had some ventilation in your clothes. Plus for S/S '14, there’s tons of options from tops and shorts to skirts, dresses and even stilettos.  Feast your eyes on my favorite eyelet pieces below and thank me when the Farmer's Almanac predictions for scorching temperatures ring true in the upcoming months..

Victoria Beckham's Victorous Line and Spring 2014 Collection

Victoria Beckham

By all accounts Victoria Beckham is a survivor.  She escaped tabloid shenanigans, fought through the stigma attached to '90s girl groups and has risen a champion in the fashion world.  When "Wannabee" hit the airwaves in 1996, I was introduced to "Girl Power" and to Victoria, known then and forever to me as "Posh Spice."  The Spice Girls may have embodied moxie, but Victoria's stance against grinning is what set her apart: a fierce smize (smile with her eyes) her statement accessory.

Cut to fall 2008, and I was taken under her spell all over again with the acclaimed launch of Victoria Beckham, a collection consisting primarily of dresses.  For me, VB has always ranked high on the best-dressed lists and been a fashion icon.   Each look in her premiere collection delivered proof that the girl who trademarked blush-worthy hemlines had evolved into a ladylike designer.  I instantly fell in love with the brand's silhouettes that were form fitting, yet sophisticated, and the thoughtful details, including zipped backs in rose gold, ribbon lined waists and luxurious fabrics.  From the time of her debut collection to her present designs, VB has created clothes that are relatable to women. I know I love her graceful style and millions of women, including myself simply aspire to dress like her.  Of course, her current collection does not disappoint- with flippy skirts, sheer panel blouses, satin bomber jackets and silk culottes. Most of all I love the feminine and elegant color palette of hot pink, grey and white.  Check out the stars of the victorious designer's spring 2014 collection below.

Ahoy Matey: Sailor Pants and Shorts

Fashion often takes a one step forward, three steps back approach. This spring, designers have taken their inspiration from the 1970s, creating pants and shorts with typical back to the future retro appeal.  While the 70s produced a lot of designs I would not be thrilled to see again, the higher waist sailor pants and shorts are a welcome sight. Like the nautical trend, but not a fan of anchors and stripes? This looks for you- both sailor pants and shorts are an ideal way to access the ever-chic nautical trend without going overboard with sailor accents and references.

Follow my easy tips for wearing these high-waisted styles below.

Tops:

Before choosing a top consider how visible the buttons on the trousers or shorts are: Do they blend in with the fabric color or do they standout because they are metallic? If they do standout, then obviously you want to showcase, rather than conceal them. Also make sure the length of your top isn't so long that it hides the high waist, which is the signature of this look.  Personally, I like wearing cropped tops and sweaters with my sailor bottoms so that the high waistline is the outfit's focal point.  Also, the waist of these bottoms should hit at the highest point of your hip to accentuate and narrow your waistline.
  • White and bright colors or striped T-shirts with or without nautical embellishments (anchors, etc.) are a classic combination with sailor bottoms, which are usually navy, red, or white.
  • Wear either short or three-quarter length sleeves to achieve a balance between upper and lower body so that your look is stream-lined for a perfect silhouette.
  • To tuck or not to tuck? This really depends on how wide your top and leg trousers are in relation to each other, and the length of the top. In general, I wear my fitted tees, blouses, and knit tops tucked in.

Shoes:

  • Go for pointy ballerinas or loafers for a relaxed style.
  • Heels with a wedge or a platform look great with sailor bottoms, but you can also go with more polished styles, like stiletto sandals for a more glamorous approach.

As old as it, the S/S '09 D&G ready to wear collection is one of my favorites for showcasing this look.  Check out the outstanding runway ensembles above, then browse my picks for 2014 below.
